Letter

Feb 11, 07

My dear M. B Baring-Gould,

I have received yours of the 9th of January for which I thank you, but I gather from its time that you have little idea how much pain and trouble Miss Barber caused in the Mission & how unChristian-like her conduct was, however, as she has now left I need not enter into the subject now.

In reply to your question as to the information in the minds of Members of Conferences when the question of the Status & Probation of Missionaries was discussed we of course all of us knew that as your resolutions say, the general principles of the scheme had been approved by the General Committee, which we understood to mean, that the idea would be carried out, subject to any modifications which report received from the various Conferences (have ad [sic] elsewhere) made necessary in the Committee’s opinions, & we all of us (or at least an overwhelming majority) felt this under all circumstances it would be better not to carry out the scheme at all so far as Fuhkien was concerned but as we feared that this was impossible, we suggested modifications so as directed by the P.C.

You will see that the Bulters are now recovering to Lo-Nguong to occupy the house repaired last year for the Ridlers which will obviate for the moment this need of renting a building at Lo-Nguong, it is most necessary for them to vacate their present quarters soon, then the Walshes may occupy them.

I am not circulating your letter of Jan 9th as it seems to be better not to do so, but of course I will also if is needed.

We are praying much about the Society’s difficult financial position & think a large deficit may yet be averted.

With kindly regard [sic]

Yours sincerely,

LL Lloyd

PS. I feel sure that if you letter were circulated it would give rise to considerable feeling re: Ms B. & I am sure you will believe I have acted for the best in keeping it private.
